La Premier League 2017-2018 è stata la 119ª edizione della massima serie del campionato inglese di calcio, nonché la 26ª della Premier League. Il campionato, disputato tra l'11 agosto 2017 ed il 13 maggio 2018, si è concluso con la vittoria del Manchester City, al suo quinto titolo.
Quest'anno il Tottenham ha giocato le sue partite interne al Wembley Stadium, in quanto lo storico impianto di White Hart Lane stava per essere demolito per far posto al nuovo Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Formula
Da questa stagione accedono alla fase a gironi della UEFA Champions League 2018-2019 le prime quattro classificate come deciso dall'UEFA. Entrano in Europa League la 5ª squadra classificata e le vincenti di FA Cup e League Cup. Nel caso in cui le vincenti delle due coppe nazionali siano già qualificate alle coppe europee tramite il campionato, al loro posto si qualificheranno la 6ª in campionato ed eventualmente la 7ª. Le ultime tre squadre classificate retrocedono in Championship.
Avvenimenti
Favorite per il titolo sono le due squadre di Manchester, City e United, e il Chelsea campione in carica. La prima sorpresa giunge già alla prima giornata con la squadra di Conte che viene sconfitta dal Burnley. I Clarets saranno la rivelazione della prima metà di stagione e nelle successive settimane usciranno indenni dalle trasferte di Wembley e Anfield. Il Manchester United rimane solitario al comando e a punteggio pieno dopo tre turni ma viene fermato a Stoke-on-Trent alla quarta partita e raggiunto dal Manchester City. Gli uomini di Guardiola si impongono nei minuti di recupero contro il Bournemouth e travolgono un Liverpool, che pochi giorni prima aveva battuto nettamente l'Arsenal. È l'inizio di una incredibile striscia di successi per i Citizens: a metà stagione il City vanta 18 vittorie e 1 solo pareggio, strappato dall'Everton.[4]
Vincendo il derby ad Old Trafford la squadra di Guardiola mette virtualmente le mani sul titolo, portando il proprio vantaggio in doppia cifra e stabilendo il record per il massimo vantaggio di un club primo in classifica sulla seconda a Natale. Il Chelsea è terzo ma a ben 16 punti dalla capolista, che aveva sbancato Stamford Bridge a settembre in un ideale passaggio di consegne. A lottare per i posti utili alla qualificazione in Champions League, ci sono anche Liverpool e Tottenham, sin troppo altalenanti nonostante le reti di Salah e Kane, e un Arsenal che rischia nuovamente l'esclusione dalla massima competizione europea. In coda, lo Swansea City è il fanalino di coda a Natale. In difficoltà anche West Bromwich e Bournemouth, così come il West Ham Utd, mentre il Crystal Palace riesce a risollevarsi dopo un inizio da incubo, in cui il club stabilisce il record per il maggior numero di partite senza segnare una rete.
La striscia di risultati utili del Manchester City si interrompe ad Anfield, con il Liverpool capace di sconfiggere la squadra di Guardiola con un pirotecnico 4-3. Nonostante la prima sconfitta, il City reagisce prontamente e con 9 vittorie nelle successive 11 gare si assicura il titolo di campione d'Inghilterra con 5 gare di anticipo.[5] A fine stagione, per i Citizens arrivano numerosi record: quello di partite vinte (32), di gol fatti (106), di punti (100) e del maggior distacco sulla seconda (+19).[6] Il Manchester United chiude secondo togliendosi la soddisfazione di vincere il derby di ritorno e rinviare di qualche giorno la festa dei cugini.
I rimanenti posti Champions vengono occupati da Tottenham e Liverpool, che riescono ad avere la meglio sul Chelsea; l'attaccante del Liverpool Salah si laurea capocannoniere con 32 gol, un record assoluto nella storia della Premier League a 20 squadre. L'Arsenal, che dopo 22 anni saluta l'allenatore Wenger, è sesto, complice un disastroso rendimento in trasferta. La squadra rivelazione della stagione si conferma il Burnley, che chiude al settimo posto e conquista una qualificazione europea dopo 52 anni. In coda retrocedono West Bromwich, Stoke City e Swansea City, a cui è fatale la sconfitta nello scontro diretto con il Southampton.
