Its location near the New York Public Library Main Branch commemorates Stein's "significant literary contributions".[1]
Sculptor Jo Davidson, a friend of Stein from her Paris years, wrote, "She somehow symbolized wisdom", and he depicted her as "a sort of modern Buddha."[citation needed]
